Tibia

One of the oldest running MMORPGs: a 2D top-down fantasy world from CipSoft with tough hunting, harsh death penalties and open PvP worlds.

Overview

Tibia, made by the German studio CipSoft, first went online in January 1997 and is one of the longest-running MMORPGs. It shows a two-dimensional, tile-based fantasy world from a top-down view in pixel art, played through a downloadable client for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Players choose a vocation such as knight, paladin, sorcerer or druid, then level by hunting creatures in caves and dungeons, completing quests and fighting bosses. Death costs experience and possibly items, so careful play and teamwork matter. Game worlds differ in their PvP rules, from optional to open and retro styles, and guilds, houses and player trading are central to long-term play.

Tibia is free to play. A premium account unlocks more areas, faster travel, house ownership and other perks, and Tibia Coins can be bought for extras or traded between players.
