Overview

The Lord of the Rings Online places players in Middle-earth during the War of the Ring. Your character travels alongside the main story of the books, through places such as Bree, Rivendell, Moria, Rohan and Gondor, and later regions added by expansions. The world is built at a walkable scale, and exploration is a large part of the appeal.

Play is traditional tab-target questing with classes, dungeons called skirmishes and instances, raids, crafting vocations and player housing. A music system lets players perform songs together, which supports an active social and roleplay scene. Monster Play lets players fight each other as creatures of Sauron in the Ettenmoors.

The game can be played for free, with quest packs, expansions and convenience items sold in the store. A VIP subscription unlocks most older content and removes several limits.
