Federation 2

Text space trading game where players haul cargo, rise through ranks and eventually own and run their own planets.

Overview

Federation 2 is a multiplayer text game about interstellar trade. Designed by Alan Lenton, it descends from the 1980s game Federation and was relaunched as Federation 2 in December 2003. The original servers closed in 2018, and a volunteer group now runs it as Federation 2: Community Edition.

Players start as traders moving goods between planets, earning money and promotions through a series of ranks. Higher ranks let players own planets, build up their economies and industries, and shape the wider market that other players trade in, so the game is about economics more than combat.

The community edition is completely free, with no way to pay. It offers a browser client, and desktop players can use Mudlet to connect to play.federation2.com on port 30003.
