Ryzom

A science fantasy sandbox MMORPG on the living planet Atys, with no classes, open-source code and a strong roleplay community.

Overview

Ryzom is a science fantasy MMORPG set on Atys, a planet made of giant plants where four playable races rebuild after an invasion by insect-like Kitin. It launched in 2004 and has passed through several owners before Winch Gate took over, and its code has been released as open source.

There are no classes. Characters level separate skill trees for fighting, magic, harvesting and crafting, and can develop all of them. Animal herds migrate with the seasons, and resources and weather change over time, which gives the world a natural feel. Harvesting and crafting are central, as most good gear is made by players.

The game has a strong roleplay and event scene, guild outposts that can be fought over and optional faction PvP. It is free to play up to a level cap, and a subscription removes the limits.
