Realms of Despair

The original SMAUG MUD, a free medieval fantasy world open since 1994 with prestige classes, clans, orders and nations.

Overview

Realms of Despair is the MUD for which the SMAUG codebase was written. Derek "Thoric" Snider started it in 1994, and it opened to the public that July; SMAUG was later released and became the base for many other MUDs.

The world contains over 250 original areas. Players choose from a wide set of races and classes, including prestige classes, and customize their appearance at creation. Equipment is often restricted by level, class, race or alignment, which shapes gear hunting. Organizations range from guilds and orders to player-killing clans and nations with their own roleplay.

The game is free. Players can use the official web client or connect any MUD client to realmsofdespair.com on port 4000, and a community wiki, RoDpedia, documents areas and mechanics.
